Early St. Louis Photographers

The vast majority of the information on this website came from Tracy Lewis (Anchorage, Alaska). There are over 1500 photography studios/locations listed here, with verified dates of operation. The fact that a date doesn't appear does not mean that the Photographer was not in business at that time, but simply that I have not received verification. Graphics courtesy of Bill Helbron.

A common question I get from readers of this webpage is "Where can I find the negatives from a particular studio?" I've never found an instance of negatives surviving any of the old studios. Obviously, if the studio is still in existence (highly unlikely), you can contact them. If you find a repository of old negatives I'd love to hear about it.

From "Encyclopedia of the History of St. Louis, a Compendium of History and Biography for Ready Reference "(1899) , edited by William Hyde and Howard L. Conard. 1899.

"Photography in St. Louis"

This is an age of picture-making, and because photography - or, as the name signifies, "lightwriting"—is the quickest, easiest and most accurate of all methods of taking pictures, it has come into use among all civilized nations. This wonderful art, which is strictly modern, and about which the ancients knew nothing, had its beginning in the year 1839, when a Frenchman, Daguerre, announced that he had discovered a method of taking images on a copper plate coated with silver.

St. Louis has good reason for being proud of its photographers, for their genius, taste and skill are recognized in places far remote from the scene of their labors, and there is no city in the United States, nor even in the world, where better pictures are to be found than in the galleries of St. Louis artists. Even in the old daguerreotype days, good work was turned out here, and when daguerreotypes were displaced by photographs, St. Louis daguerreotyists became the most skillful photographers, though T. M. Easterly, who stood in the front rank of the profession, never changed his first love for the original and beautiful daguerreotype. Outley, on the west side of Third Street, between St. Charles and Washington Avenue, was a popular daguerreotypist in the later "forties" and "fifties," and afterward became a popular photographer. For many years, Long maintained an establishment on Market Street, corner of Fourth, which was a favorite resort and afterward passed into the hands of Hoelke & Benecke. Fox and Fitzgibbon turned out good pictures from their galleries on Fourth Street - and so on down through Scholten, Cramer, Guerin, Strauss, Rosch, Gross, Hammer, Holborn, Parsons and others whose names stand high on the roll. In the days when the photograph first displaced the daguerreotype, John A. Scholten was the recognized leader, and later on Strauss, Guerin and Rosch brought honor to their city by carrying off prize medals, not only at home, but abroad, at world's expositions in European capitals.

In the early days the profession was an humble one. The rooms of the pioneer daguerreotypists and photographers were upstairs, contracted little places on the second floor, reached by a narrow flight of steps from the pavement ; and it was not until what may be called the dry plate era was reached, and the art had been expanded and exalted into a greater development and dignity, that it could afford rooms on the first floor. Cramer & Gross, whose establishment, on the corner of Chouteau Avenue and Broadway, was for a time a favorite resort, were among the first to indulge in a reception-room on the ground floor; others followed the example, and the quarters of our photographers became what they are to-day, noble galleries of pictures, and studios of artists, as well.

It will be a surprise to most of the people of St. Louis to know that their city stands eminent in the world for the superiority of its dry plates, which is even more widely recognized and acknowledged than the quality of other manufactures on which it is accustomed to pride itself. The making of these plates in St. Louis is more extensive than anywhere else in the world. There are three establishments, two of them, the Cramer Dry Plate Works and the Seed Dry Plate Works, very large and complete; and the third, the Hammer Dry Plate Works, more recently established, and the three establishments turn out $1,000,000 worth of plates a year. Their work at the beginning attracted the attention of photographers who were quick to discern its excellence, and orders followed so rapidly that their capacity had to be enlarged from time to time to meet the demand. At least - four-fifths of the dry plates used in the western hemisphere are furnished by the St. Louis works, and even old Europe receives a share of them.

Comments sent by on April 26, 2014: "Just an FYI........you have the name and date wrong on the first ever photo.....
Centuries of advances in chemistry and optics, including the invention of the camera obscura, set the stage for the world’s first photograph. In 1826, French scientist Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, took that photograph, titled View from the Window at Le Gras, at his family’s country home. Niépce produced his photo—a view of a courtyard and outbuildings seen from the house’s upstairs window—by exposing a bitumen-coated plate in a camera obscura for several hours on his windowsill"

Mellor, Joseph N (successor to Geo. P. TG Easterley at 218 1/2 N 4th for 1871, and Joseph Mellor is somewhere in St Louis County (outside the city) at the time of the 1870 Census, I have to presume the business was sold on about 1870.
