As you are probably aware, for all intents and purposes, nearly the entire U. S. Federal Census of 1890 was destroyed by fire in 1921. I'd never thought about it, but the task of "pretending" that I was my ancestor, and answering the 1890 census taker's questions was quite thought provoking. For many of us, the 1880 to 1900 period is a void. Thinking in 1890 terms forced me to see my ancestors in a brand new light (in my case, my grandmother had only 3 of her 11 children at the time, and all under 4 years of age).
If you are interested in partaking in this project you can send me the data directly.
Pretend it is June 1, 1890, and you are answering the census taker's questions. Please give the following information (IN EXACTLY THIS FORMAT):
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD full name (SURNAME, first middle):
date born (month-day-year)
relationship (Head, Wife, S-Son, D-Daughter, etc)
sex (M=male or F=female)
race (W=White, C=Colored, I=Indian, A=Asian)
age (rounded to year = 1890 - birth year)
place born (town-county-state or country)
SPOUSE's full name (maiden surname in ( )'s and include the same information as the Head of Household's
CHILD'S full name and include the same information as the Head of Household
NOTES: Include address of enumeration, city, county, state plus anything else you deem pertinent.
SUBMITTED BY: Name and address of submitter. Also include E-Mail address if applicable.
YOUR SUBMISSION SHOULD LOOK EXACTLY LIKE THIS, READY FOR ME TO "CUT'N'PASTE". IF IT'S NOT, I'LL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO SIMPLY DISCARD IT:

NOTES: John is believed to have immigrated in 1872 just shy of age 15 and
settled in St. Louis by 1875. He married Sophie 11/23/1881 and, in addition
to the children listed above, two daughters Metaline and Etta were born
11/9/1894 and 07/14/1897 respectively. Maria A. G. died very young. Elsie
Katharina was my grandmother. John worked for the Teuscher Distillery for
about 10 years after settling in St. Louis. About 1885, he and a partner
opened a feed and grain store. By about 1900 he was sole proprietor of John
C. Roever Feed & Grain, located at 4101 Natural Bridge Rd. By 1909 he was a
member of the Hay & Grain Exchange in St. Louis. The feed and grain
operation was a supplier of that commodity to the Fairgrounds race track and
is thought to have been a supplier to the 1904 Worlds Fair. The family
resided first above the feed and grain store. By 1900 the family residence
had become a home located at 4101 Kossuth. John and Sophie maintained that
residence until their passing away in 1942 and 1949 respectively.

(Update 12/12/2009: My family enjoys your pages very much. I wanted to correct this note in regards to the Roever's place of business. It was located at 5601 Nat. Bridge, not 4101. My great Grandfather, John A. Conrad, worked there as the night watchman. I suppose this is after the Roevers moved to Kossuth. You show both addresses as 4101. The seed & milling company was just west of Clara Ave, where the railroad tracks ran behind the building at an angle. On the other side of Clara was the Polar Ice Co. I obtained this info from my Dad, John E. Conrad. Just thought the family would like to know, if they don't already. Keep up the great work, we appreciate it! Marianne Conrad Riordan

NOTES: Henry ( head ) is thought to have immigrated before 1850. Sophia
reported in the 1900 census she immigrated in 1849. The immigrant couple
were married 07/25/1850 in St. Louis, MO. The couple are great great
grandparents to the submitter. Sophie Christina was my great grandmother.
Henry operated a successful dairy operation for many years near St. Charles
Rock Rd. and Taylor. He was also a vetrinary surgeon. Sophia reported in
the 1900 census she had 10 children and 6 were surviving in 1900. Anna,
William, Emma, and H. Gustave are thought or known to be the children not
surviving as of 1900. William's widow remarried and moved to Arkansas.
Henry ( head ) passed away in 1891. Sophia lived to age 97 and would have
lived longer were it not for a fall down a long flight of stairs. She
survived the fall with a broken hip but, never fully recovered and passed
away sometime thereafter.

JACOB, Jacob; 06/1890; S-M-W; 0; Germany (may have gone by the name of Frank - ran away at the age of about 16 or 18 and never heard from again)
NOTES: Lived around 7th and Broadway in what was Ward 8 of the City of St. Louis until just after 1900. I found Anna as a widow in 1907 in a City Directory, so Fred died some time between 1900 and 1907, but cannot find death record or obit. Fred was a shoemaker, Anna a housewife, and the children all ended up working in the tobacco industry. My g-grandfather was Henry J. and he is the only one that I have any information about. (They actually didn't arrive in the U.S. until some time in 1891, but I wanted to include them since it was so close to 1890 when they got here.) If you know of any JACOBs that could be these, please get in touch!

JOY, Frances E; b 1890; daughter F W; ST LOUIS MISSOURI USA
JOY, Florence E V; b 1892; daughter F W; ST LOUIS MISSOURI USA
NOTES This family migrated to the USA sometime between 1885 & 1887. In the 1871 UK census David Joy Snr is listed as a farm labourer and in the 1881 UK census he is a domestic gardener. For whatever reason the family left the USA and returned to England between 1892 & 1895, the evidence being that another child, Anne Matilda Joy, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England in 1895.
It is the 1901 UK census that identifies the birth place for 3 of the children as being in St Louis. The census enumerator has clearly and legibly specified St Louis, Missouri, USA. In 1901 the whole family lived together at 3 Esmond Street, Bradford England. David Joy Snr was a stone mason (did he gain this skill in St Louis?). William Edgar Joy (20) has his own business as a fish hawker. The occupation of Albert Edward Joy (16) is partly obliterated on the census form but seems to read as "Harness tierup xxxxxx". Now living in one of the major centres of the 19th century Yorkshire woollen textiles industry, David E Joy is a spinner of worsted yarn.
NB a couple of UK family trees identify Frances Joy as Frank E Joy but she is clearly identified as female and a daughter on the original 1901 UK census sheet. Nothing is known of their time in St Louis.

Andrew was a teamster and later a delivery driver. Their name was often misspelled so they first dropped the "E" in the middle to become MOENKHUS and later dropped the "O" to become MENKHUS. Joseph Michel, the father, worked for a brewery (not sure which one).He was described as a teamster in the 1880 census, and my grandfather called him a "buggy striper"; In 1900 he was described as a night watchman. In 1880 he lived at 2237 Virginia St. and in 1900 he lived at 2237 Missouri Avenue. Evidently the name of the street was changed, but I can not get specifics on when and why. He lived at this address until his death in 1917, so I am sure that he lived there in 1890, whether as Virginia St. or as Missouri Avenue. This is the 12th Ward at this time.

He probably worked for the city in 1890 although I haven't verified this with a city directory.
