To The Bellefontaine Cemetery Association

                     Gent.

We address you on behalf of the Trustees of the First Methodist Church South. It is perhaps known to some of you, that this church lost its grave yard on Franklin Avenue in a suit brot by the heirs of Stoddard. Since that decision the friends of some of the deceased persons have removed them to other locations, but there are a great many who have no friends & whose bodies will have to be removed by the Trustees at their own expense or suffer their graves to be expond(?). We have determined to remove the bodies to an existing grave yard and if we can we would like to transfer them to the Bellefontaine Cemetery. We would like to buy from a quarter to half an acre of ground. And as it is an individual expense we cannot afford to buy the ground by the square foot. We are not particular about the spot assigned.

The undersigned respectfully desire to know whether we can get the ground desired & what you would charge us by the acre.

                          Resfly Yours, Obsvts

                                                October 27, 1856

                  Extract From The Minutes Of

                  The Bellefontaine Cemetery Association

"...A communication was received from William Finney and Tho. C. Johnson, a committee on behalf of the Trustees of the First Methodist Church South, requesting that a burial lot of a quarter or half an acre for the reinterment of bodies now buried in the Methodist grave yard of Franklin Avenue, the title of which has been lost, be sold at a less price than that fixed by the regulations.

Whereupon, after consultation, it was on motion of Gerard B. Allen Resolved:

That one quarter of an acre of ground in the Bellefontaine Cemetery be disposed of to the Methodist Church South for the reinterment of those bodies now interred in their cemetery on Franklin Ave. for the sum of $500.00 on condition that the ground be selected by the Superintendent after consultation with the standing committee and that it be devoted solely to the burial of those bodies spoken of..."

The First Methodist Church South burial lot (Blocks 191/192/194/195, Lot 719) is located on Meadow Avenue in the Meadow Hill area of Bellefontaine Cemetery. The brownstone, marble and limestone tombstones are among the oldest in the cemetery. There are 119 interments in the lot.

The earliest recorded burial of those transferred from the Franklin Avenue Cemetery was January 14, 1813; the last burial (the only stone of granite) was 1923.

Interments are no longer permitted on the lot.
